Skanstullshallen
Skanstullhallen, Stockholm’s first full-sized sports center within the city limits since 1941, was inaugurated on April 12 2011 by the City Planning- and Sport Mayor of Stockholm, Regina Kevius. TEA has been the designing architect.
The adjacent Frans Schartau gymnasium use the facility in daytime while in the evenings and weekends the local teams, especially IK Bolton handball club, reside here.
Skanstullshallen is about 2200 sqm and contains, besides the main hall, locker rooms, administration, a gym, a lecture room and a small café by the entrance.
The entrance is also the site of Jacob Dahlgren's artwork, Forward, Back, Right, Left, a three-dimensional sculpture made from thin aluminium pipes in different colours. The sculpture is inspired by the floormarkings for different sports inside the arena.
A major challenge has been to incorporate a large building into a complex urban context consisting of residential buildings, a large outdoor sports field, an old park and a steep south-facing slope.
This was resolved by placing parts of the building under ground and creating a division between the higher sports hall and a lower part with supporting facilities underneath a terrace that connects the different levels. The different volumes are also accentuated in the facade through the use of contrasting materials. A green roof with sedum contributes in making this a sustainable urban addition.
