In a radical redesign of a rational office building from the 1960s, 109 contemporary apartments ranging from studios to four-bedroom flats were ready for occupancy by the end of 2007. The apartments are reached via a generous courtyard facing the green pastures of Gärdet. A grid of new balconies, freely composed, is added to the typical office-like facade. The tender balconies, and enlarged glazing partitions, are significant additions that contribute to the new identity of the building. The free composition emphasizes the horizontally and strictly organized windows of the pre-existing facade. Two new penthouse stories are added on top of the building and attached to the existing building’s framework. Partitions and fillings, however, are freely composed in the same manner as the new balconies. Clarity in the added elements, new balconies and penthouse stories, as well as coherence with the linearity and scale of the pre-existing building, have been crucial factors in the design process.
